For this workshop we will be travelling to a private property located in Moscow, Ohio to hunt for wild tree specimens and collect them. Cost is $30 per person.
The December Meeting is our Annual Holiday Party at the Krohn Conservatory, Saturday, December 2. The Krohn will be decorated in the Christmas theme with soft lighting in the evening. It’s a beautiful display. All members and Family are welcome. BSGC will provide the meal and the Executive Committee will provide the refreshments. The cost per person is $10.00 per adult and children under 12 are free.
The October 2023 Bonsai Beginner's Workshop featured the willow leaf fig (Ficus salicifolia), which is a great tropical species for beginners. It's fast-growing, resilient and does well indoors. Our class of 14 students received expert guidance from our Society members who came to help most of them create their very first bonsai. It was a fun, experiential class and we hope all of our students continue with the Society and this amazing art form!
There were around 40 trees on display at this year's Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn. Here are all of them as they were displayed, along with some of the people that helped make this a great show - enjoy!
The New Talent competition this year was a great event with eight Society members facing off against each other and the judges in an attempt to create the best bonsai tree from raw material.
Our very own club member, Aaron Burger of aaronburger.com, took professional photos of most of the trees at this years Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn Conservatory. If you were in attendance at the show but didn't have your tree photographed, you missed out on a fantastic opportunity!
In this demonstration, Chris creates a forest group "Yose-ue" on a slab using three Itoigawa junipers (Juniperus chinensis 'itoigawa'.) The final bonsai is housed in the permanent collection at the Cincinnati Krohn Conservatory.
The Solway Gallery's current exhibition is called "Tree Conscious", which is a group exhibition that celebrates tree imagery and includes paintings of bonsai as portraits.

There is no written record of when the idea of a permanent bonsai exhibit at the Krohn Conservatory first occurred. However, there is no doubt the seed germinated in the fertile mind of John Carroll. It is correctly presumed that this seed was planted via visitation to similar exhibits at botanical gardens and horticultural facilities in other communities.
