BSGC Staruday Yamadori Workshop with Ben Kirkland of Appalachina Bonsai

NOTE: This workshp will happen, rain/snow, or shine.  In the event that we cannot hold it due to extreme weather conditions, we will set a makeup date with the property owners (albeit without Ben) to collect.

For this workshop we will be travelling to a private property located in Moscow, Ohio to hunt for wild tree specimens and collect them.  This 40-acre property, which the owners have graciously given us permission to use, has a number of trails, and abuts an old quarry which we have access to, so it will be a good area to look for native species to collect as bonsai.  Cost is $30 per person.

The owners live on-site and we will have access to restrooms as well as an on-site greenhouse (the owner collects dahlias) in which to warm up if we get too cold.

In order to participate you must bring a signed copy of the waiver.  We will have extras printed the day-of in case you forget.

A note on safety

There is a quarry on-site.  At the abutment there is a sheer cliff drop-off.

What to bring

• Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty.
• Work gloves
• Hiking boots or sturdy shoes.  The area is hilly.
• There are several shovels on-site but it wouldn't hurt to bring one if you have it.
• Pruners to cut back your tree
• Several heavy-duty garbage bags, burlap, cloth grow-pot, or other items to securely contain the root ball.
• Duct Tape
• Mattock or pick-axe if you have one
• A pruning saw
• Drinking water
• A packed lunch and snacks

The day-of:

• Attendees will pair up to search for and extract a tree from the ground.  Digging up a tree can be difficult so be prepared to break a sweat.
• There will be two helpers that can assist as needed.
• Depending on its size, your tree may be heavy.  There will be at least one wagon/cart/wheelbarrow to help bring the tree to your vehicle.
• PLEASE MAKE SURE WHATEVER TREE YOU DIG UP WILL FIT IN YOUR VEHICLE!
• If you finish extracting your tree early and have the time, please help others that may need it.
• And most importantly, be safe and have fun!
