For the last Beginner's Workshop of 2024 we had a class of fun people who were eager to get started on the bonsai journey. We had a really interesting species of tropical tree from Indonesia called premna which has beautiful small glosy leaves, gets white flowers and purple fruit, and has a really weird odor. Thanks to all those that attended, and to the club members that volunteered their time to help out!

The June Beginner's Worksop was a lot of fun and we had a great group of new folks learning about bonsai. The subject for this class was green island Ficus and we had some really nice pre-bonsai trees for the class. Everyone's trees turned out great and we're excited to see how they grow over the coming years!
If you're interested in taking a workshop like this, please check our calendar for upcoming dates.
This year's summer picnic was a great celebration of the past year in bonsai with the society.

For this Beginner's Workshop we used parrot's beak (gmelina philippinensis) to create a unique bonsai tree. I think everyone had fun and hope they continue to learn and love bonsai!

If you didn't make it to the yamadori outing with Ben Kirkland from Appalachian Bonsai (Appalachian Bonsai) you missed a great trip. Was it cold? YES! Did it snow the night before? YES! Did everyone have a good time and find some great trees?
We had our annual holiday party at the Krohn once again this year. This was the 30th annual party, which was started by members Joe and Mary Kayata way back in 1993.
Thanks to the BSGC for another great year!
The October 2023 Bonsai Beginner's Workshop featured the willow leaf fig (Ficus salicifolia), which is a great tropical species for beginners. It's fast-growing, resilient and does well indoors. Our class of 14 students received expert guidance from our Society members who came to help most of them create their very first bonsai. It was a fun, experiential class and we hope all of our students continue with the Society and this amazing art form!
There were around 40 trees on display at this year's Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn. Here are all of them as they were displayed, along with some of the people that helped make this a great show - enjoy!
Our very own club member, Aaron Burger of aaronburger.com, took professional photos of most of the trees at this years Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn Conservatory. If you were in attendance at the show but didn't have your tree photographed, you missed out on a fantastic opportunity!
The New Talent competition this year was a great event with eight Society members facing off against each other and the judges in an attempt to create the best bonsai tree from raw material.
If you weren't able to make it down for the Waterfront Gardens bonsai show in Louisville this weekend, I took pictures of all of the tree so you could see the quality of specimens on display from both the Gardens and the Louisville Bonsai Society. There were some amazing trees there and it was definitely worth the drive down to see them. The Gardens is also in the process of building a permanent bonsai display so it will be a nice destination if you're in the area.
This was a fantastic workshop, with Will showing the attendees the ins and outs of carving. Topics included tool selection, techniques, and styles for carving the wood on a tree. The results were pretty amazing!
Ken Huth visited the BSGS for the March monthly meeting and demonstrated how to create fused trident maple bonsai.
Teruko Nesbitt demonstrated Japanese flower arranging knows as ikebana at the February meeting. You can read more about her at https://jasgc.org/en/mission/team/.
Our annual holiday party took place at the Krohn Conservatory, and was a spectacular event surrounded by the incredible holiday displays at the Krohn.
Frank Mihalic of WILDWOODGARDENS.COM and FRANKSBONSAIJEWELRY.COM visited from Cleveland, Ohio for this wonderful shimpaki juniper workshop. Everyone learned a lot from Frank and had a great time!
Prior to COVID disrupting everything, the new talent competition was an annual event hosted at the Krohn Conservatory during the Fall Bonsai Show, and now finally it was back again this year!
Administered by Lifetime Member Don Brown, this year's competition tree was the garden juniper (juniper procumbens 'nana',) and looked to be a challenging tree for the eight new members taking part in the competition.
1st Place: Phil Horney
2nd Place: Brando Dallesandro
3rd Place: John Davis
The BSGC's Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn Conservatory is always a fantastic event, and this year was no exception. There were many beautiful trees, from old favorites to first-time entries, including Braden Matt's show-winning conifer.
If you missed the show, here are all of the trees.
For the August workshop, bonsai artist Rob Kempinski critiqued the brought trees and helped with design, trimming, and styling.
