The October 2023 Bonsai Beginner's Workshop featured the willow leaf fig (Ficus salicifolia), which is a great tropical species for beginners.  It's fast-growing, resilient and does well indoors.  Our class of 14 students received expert guidance from our Society members who came to help most of them create their very first bonsai.  It was a fun, experiential class and we hope all of our students continue with the Society and this amazing art form!

Our very own club member, Aaron Burger of aaronburger.com, took professional photos of most of the trees at this years Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn Conservatory.  If you were in attendance at the show but didn't have your tree photographed, you missed out on a fantastic opportunity!

If you weren't able to make it down for the Waterfront Gardens bonsai show in Louisville this weekend, I took pictures of all of the tree so you could see the quality of specimens on display from both the Gardens and the Louisville Bonsai Society.  There were some amazing trees there and it was definitely worth the drive down to see them.  The Gardens is also in the process of building a permanent bonsai display so it will be a nice destination if you're in the area.

This was a fantastic workshop, with Will showing the attendees the ins and outs of carving.  Topics included tool selection, techniques, and styles for carving the wood on a tree.  The results were pretty amazing!

Prior to COVID disrupting everything, the new talent competition was an annual event hosted at the Krohn Conservatory during the Fall Bonsai Show, and now finally it was back again this year!

Administered by Lifetime Member Don Brown, this year's competition tree was the garden juniper (juniper procumbens 'nana',) and looked to be a challenging tree for the eight new members taking part in the competition.

The BSGC's Fall Bonsai Show at the Krohn Conservatory is always a fantastic event, and this year was no exception.  There were many beautiful trees, from old favorites to first-time entries, including Braden Matt's show-winning conifer.

If you missed the show, here are all of the trees.
