Krohn Conservatory Bonsai #8 - Willow-leaf Ficus

Scientific Name:

  • Ficus microphylla

Species

  • Willow-leaf Ficus

This Willow-leaf Ficus was donated by Bonsai Society member D. Brown in 1998.

It is an informal upright style.  The pot is oval, glazed, blue/green in color and is 4 inches deep.

A native plant of southern Asia and India, the willow- leaf Ficus (Ficus nerifolia or Ficus salicifolia) can grow outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 10 and 11. Since it adapts easily to most locations, it also can grow indoors in almost any climate. Because of its adaptability and its unusual brown-gray trunk and pointed, narrow green leaves, the willow leaf Ficus has become a favorite with many bonsai artists as well as a desirable house plant.

Sudden changes in light or temperature may shock the Ficus into shedding its leaves but new ones will develop rapidly. During the interim, avoid over watering.  It is excellent material for nearly any style of bonsai.
